we experienced massive problems building PGCluster rc5/rc7 on the two recent 
debian distribitions. So you might encounter similar problem on ubuntu :-(

I beleive it is somwhat connected to the exact setup you are having. If you 
are running a 64Bit version of Linux you are better off using SuSE Linux 
where it works out of the box, while the loadbalancer constantly crashes on 
Debian. On SuSE the replicator works as expected, while on Debian only one 
connection after a failure is accepted an afterwards all connections are 
rejected ...

Now if you run a 32bit version your mileage may vary.

The general question is: can you install a postgresql db (standalone) and ist 
_that_ one running without a hitch ?
If yes, did you closely follow the setup rules on the website ? If possible, 
please post your architecture and your configuration including /etc/hosts and 
show, that the DNS name resolver works (paste a shell snip-n-paste in the 
mail).

If you are using 64bit, you might want to check out cybercluster:

They offer a cleaned version of PostgreSQL 8.1 + PGCluster for 32 and 64 Bit 
(AMD) available as DEB-packages:
