Splendid!  Thanks for taking the trouble to figure this all out.  I'll 
fix up the indentation and merge this today, and then later we can worry 
about putting things in the right places and splicing out that 
commonality with prepared-statement parameters.

I think the commonality will be a lot easier to figure out now with this 
diff at hand.
